What I Wore...Sisters

Last week, we took a quick road trip to CA to see my little sister Brooke.
She was home from BYU Hawaii for a few weeks for Christmas break.
We spent the day on Venice Beach (one of our favorite spots) enjoying the amazingly warm weather.
I took advantage of having Brooke around to get some "What I Wore" shots:
What Brooke Wore:
Dress - Downeast
Cardigan - Target
Shoes - Urban Outfitters sale
Sunglasses - Thrifted

What I Wore:
Shirt- borrowed from Brooke (Urban sale again)
Undershirt - Downeast
Leggings - Target
I was experimenting with "leggings as pants".
I usually wear leggings under a dress or a very long shirt.
I don't usually consider them to be real pants.
But...I have been seeing a lot of people pull it off lately and it always looks so cute.
I thought I'd give it a try...

Good thing I had Brooke around to loan me a shirt to go with the leggings.
Doesn't everyone need a Brookie in their lives?

Let them be little

I've been thinking a lot about parenting lately.
I talked with close friend the other day who is strongly opposed to large families.
She thinks it is neglect to have so many kids that you cannot give adequate attention to each one.
She came from a large family and did not enjoy it.

I came from a large family and I loved it.  My mom has 6 kids, and my Dad and his wife have another.  My step-dad also has 6 kids.
I am the oldest and I loved it.  I love each of my siblings.  Being the oldest, I love them in a motherly kind of way.  When my mom was spread too thin, I helped.  I loved always having a baby at home.  I've had a carseat in my car for as long as I can remember.  When I had my own children, I felt ready for it.

I have three children already, but I know that we will have more.  I want a big family and so does my husband.  While I do not agree with my friend about big families being "neglect", I do want to make sure that if I have a big family, I do it right.  I want to focus on what's most important and I want each of my children to feel that I love them individually.

“If I had my had my child to raise over again:
I’d build self-esteem first and the house later
I’d finger paint more and point the finger less
I would do less correcting and more connecting
I’d take my eyes off my watch and watch with my eyes
I would care to know less and know to care more
I’d take more hikes and fly more kites
I’d stop playing serious and seriously play
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars
I’d do more hugging and less tugging
I’d see the oak tree in the acorn more often
I would be firm less often and affirm much more
I’d model less about the love of power
And more about the power of love.
~ Diane Loomans

One of my friends took a parenting class at BYU Education week a few years ago, and we had a discussion afterwards that has really stuck with me.  She said that parenting young children is about helping them find joy in life.  It's not about making sure that they can read by the time they are 3, or are competing in professional sports as soon as they can walk...it's about JOY.

I don't mean to discount the importance of education or any other interest (my boys love sports!), but the most important part of being a child, is loving life.  It seems that expectations are getting harder to achieve, and we are placing them on our children younger and younger.

“Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so they have very little time with their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world.

- Mother Theresa

I talked to our pediatrician recently about some of Saxon's emotional outbursts.  He reminded me to make sure to praise Saxon.  Help him to know how important he is, how good he is, and how much we love him.  Then, our emotional bank account is full, so that when I need to draw from it and discipline him, it doesn't upset the balance.  He still knows that I love him.  And...he will start looking for attention in positive ways if we show him that he can get attention for being good.

I love the song "Let them be little" by Billy Dean
"So let them be little 'cause they're only that way for a while
Give them hope, give them praise, give them love everyday
Let them cry, let them giggle, let them sleep in the middle
Oh just let them be little."

I think of this song a lot because my kids are always sneaking into the middle.
I put them in their beds, and I wake up to them climbing into mine.
When I get annoyed, this song usually runs through my head and I think that if I don't let them sleep in the middle sometimes, one day I will be sad.  Because they won't always be little, and they won't always want to sleep in the middle.

Last week we spent a day at the beach.  I let Bridger swim in his undies, and let my little brother half bury Dalton is sand.  Saxon found a million shells and wanted to keep them all.  I said ok.
I love it that they are little.  I find joy watching them enjoy life.  I want to have a big family and teach them to find joy in each other.  I want them to be little as long as they can.  I want our home to be a sanctuary.

I was talking to my husband a few days ago because I was really stressed.  About money.  It's usually about money.  We always seem to fall short and I always worry.  I was telling him that despite the fact that I have a nagging worry in the back of my mind all of the time, I think I will always look back at this time in my life and think that it was my favorite.  Being young parents of young children.  Having time when they are little and they are all mine.  I love it!

And somehow, by writing all of this down, it helps me remember to be grateful, and helps me remember to do better.  :)

Impromptu Road Trip

Every since my sister Brooke went away to BYUH, I've been trying to figure out when I can see her next.  I really want to fly to Hawaii and spend a week with her (who wouldn't?)...but we don't really have the money for any major vacations...much less a trip to Hawaii.
I wanted to spend Christmas with my family in CA, but Nate works for Walgreens, and they can't take any time off during the holiday months.
So, as soon as all of the holidays were over, we decided to take a last minute weekend road trip to CA to see Brooke before she had to fly back.
Since we drove all the way there, my mom took us to DISNEYLAND for the day!
It was magical!
I'm from CA, but we've never taken or kids to Disneyland because it is so expensive.
My mom found some discount tickets and we packed a lunch, and had the time of our lives!
I had a talk with my kids on the way down there, explaining that our special treat was that we get to go to Disneyland.  We are not asking for anything while we are there!  They were SO GOOD!  They didn't ask for one single thing.  They just enjoyed the magic of being at Disneyland.
The day after Disneyland, we spent the day at Venice Beach.
My mom grew up in Venice, and it just doesn't feel like a trip home without a trip to Venice Beach.  The weather was beautiful!
Did everyone else have unseasonably warm weather last week?
Then we had to hit up our favorite Mexican Food place...Titos.  :)
After a few wonderful days of family and sunshine, we headed home to Utah.
What did you do this weekend?

One of a Kind Citron Straps with Vintage Sheet Panel Mei Tai Baby Carrier by Big Sister Designs
I love all of the beautiful fabrics.
I love the pretty girly fabrics, but being the mom of all boys, I LOVE that she offers boy fabrics.  If you have boys, you know how hard it can be to find "boy" baby accessories.
My nursing cover is blue floral because it seemed more "boy" than pink floral, and my baby sling is blue paisley because it was that or pink paisley.
(sigh) It was the best we could do :)

I love that the picture above is a dad wearing his baby...too cute!

These Mei Tai carriers sell for $50 and Maria is giving one away for FREE to one lucky winner!
 (U.S. addresses only).

Here's how to enter:

Moroccan Chicken and Couscous

Monday night for dinner I pulled out one of my favorite new cookbooks...the free-with-subscription-parents-magazine-cookbook.  I ordered a subscription just because I wanted the cookbook.  I was a little disappointed when it came in the mail though.  It looked more like a mini-magazine than a cookbook.  But, I decided to try it out anyway, and I found some really wonderful, easy, recipes.

Here's one of my favorites:
Moroccan Chicken with Couscous and Baby Spinach

1 tsp. ground cumin
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 pkg. tomato-lentil couscous
1 pkg. fresh baby spinach
Stir together seasoning  and sprinkle over chicken.  Heat oil in a large skillet and cook chicken for 8-10 minutes on each side turning over only once.

Prepare couscous according to directions.
When chicken is done, transfer to another dish and add the baby spinach to the skillet and let it cook until it wilts (about 1-2 minutes).  Mix the cooked spinach into the cooked couscous.

Serve chicken with couscous-spinach on the side.
My kids actually LOVE this recipe.  The chicken is juicy and has a TON of flavor.  The spinach is hidden in the couscous so my kids hardly notice it as they eat it.

I've been checking out the Parents recipe website for other fun new recipes for families since I have loved their little mini-cookbook so much!

What I Wore...more thrifting

This is an outfit post that my sister put together for me the last time I was in CA.
I never had a chance to post it, but I thought of it the other day because I am on my way to CA right now...

My sister Brooke is home from BYU Hawaii for a few more days and we are heading down for a quick trip to see her.  Since I'm not sure I'll ever be able to afford to go to Hawaii to see her, we have to take advantage of her being within driving distance
Shirt - Thifted
Pants - hand-me-down
Shoes - borrowed from Brooke
Jewelry - borrowed from Brooke
Doesn't everyone need a Brookie in their lives?
I wish she was around to pick out my clothes everyday LOL.

Resolution: ORGANIZE

My New Year's Resolution this year?
Get organized!
It's not that I'm not organized...
it's just that I have a lot of people living in a small amount of space.
We have a family of 5 in a 2 bedroom townhouse.
Just a few things out of place, or not well-placed, seem to clutter the whole house.

My life seems to feel more peaceful and balanced when I'm totally organized.
So that's the goal this year:
Find creative ways to organize a small space.
Here's some creative organizing tips that I've come across:

Martha Stewart Garage Organization:

Vintage spoons.  I don't know how effective it is for organizing, but it was too pretty not to post:

Martha Stewart "Mini Office in a Chest How-to":
I love this!  I think I'm going to have Nate build me one to organize my work stuff.

Silverware:
Would make a pretty display for a party.

Craft room organizing:

Bathroom organizing from Leanne's "Top 11 organizing post of 2011".
I love her blog!
